Respiratory Protection, PPE & Medical Surveillance

Identify airborne hazards, exposure scenarios and tasks that may require respiratory protection. Industrial hygiene monitoring and available data are used to determine where respirators fit within the control strategy.

Select appropriate respirator classes, cartridges and use conditions, then document responsibilities and procedures in a site-specific written program. Selection considers contaminant, concentration, task and emergency conditions.

Establish a process for obtaining and documenting employee medical clearance before required respirator use. Coordination keeps medical determinations appropriately separated from employer decision-making while supporting timely deployment.

Support initial and recurring qualitative or quantitative fit testing as appropriate for the respirator and use. Training addresses inspection, donning, seal checks, limitations, maintenance and recognition of changing conditions.

Evaluate eye, face, hand, body, hearing and respiratory protection needs in relation to identified hazards. Compatibility, usability and task demands are considered so protective elements work together.
